AI voice-overs that sound more real than real
A good AI voice-over does not sound like a machine, but like a professional in the studio: natural emphasis, breaths, emotion and timing that matches the image. I produce AI voice-overs for commercials, TV, cinema and social media in many languages, directing them as I would a real recording. The result sounds more real than real.
What a good AI voice-over can do today
AI voices have advanced enormously in a short time. A good AI voice-over uses natural emphasis, conveys emotion and can whisper, laugh and breathe. The same voice can speak many languages while retaining a recognisably consistent tone. And if a line in the script changes, a new version is ready in minutes, rather than requiring another studio booking.
I always work with the latest voice model available, currently ElevenLabs Eleven v4. But the model is only the instrument. Direction determines whether a voice is convincing.
Why most AI voices still sound like AI
Although the technology has come so far, you can immediately hear the AI voice in many videos. The reasons are almost always the same:
- Monotone delivery: Every sentence sounds the same, with no sense of progression.
- Brand names pronounced incorrectly: Product names and foreign words are said incorrectly.
- No breaths: The voice speaks without taking a breath and therefore sounds artificial.
- Sound that is too clean: The voice floats over the image without any sense of space.
- Text written for the eye, not the ear: Long sentences that read well but are difficult to say.
- Timing that does not match the image: The voice runs alongside the edit instead of moving with it.
All of these issues can be solved. The following tips show you how.
Our tips: how to make an AI voice-over sound more real than real
1. Write for the ear
Use short sentences, avoid complex constructions, and spell out numbers and abbreviations. Read the text aloud before generating it. If you stumble when reading it, the AI will stumble too.
2. Punctuation is direction
Commas, full stops and ellipses control pauses and breathing. A well-placed full stop can have more impact than any setting.
3. Write brand names phonetically
Write product names, foreign words and abbreviations as they should be spoken. The current voice model also understands phonetic notation (IPA) for this. A brand name pronounced incorrectly can ruin any commercial.
4. Cast the voice against the picture
Do not listen to several voices separately; place them directly under the edit instead. A voice that sounds good on its own can be completely wrong for the image.
5. Direct emotion deliberately
ElevenLabs Eleven v4 understands direction written directly in the text, as audio tags such as [laughs] or [whispers], and even as instructions in plain language. Use them sparingly, like a director in a studio—not in every sentence.
6. Do not settle for the default
The default settings are a starting point, not the result. Too smooth sounds monotonous; too much freedom sounds unpredictable. Test each voice and text anew until the balance is right.
7. Generate multiple takes, then edit them together
Just as with a real voice actor, generate each sentence several times and choose the best delivery for each one. The finished commercial often consists of many takes.
8. Generate in context
Generate complete paragraphs rather than individual words so the sentence melody and progression work. Regenerate individual sentences when the emphasis is not right.
9. Keep the breaths
Do not cut out breaths and small pauses. They are exactly what make a voice sound human. A voice without breathing sounds artificial straight away.
10. Place the sound in the space
AI voices often sound too clean. Subtle room sound, EQ and compression place the voice in the scene so it fits the image and the music.
11. Let the picture set the pace
Match speaking pace and pauses to the edit and music, not the other way around. A voice-over that lands on the edit sounds professional.
12. Master for the channel
A TV commercial is mixed to EBU R128, while social media requires a different loudness level from television. The same voice needs a separate mix for each channel.
One voice, many languages
For international campaigns, this is one of the biggest advantages: the same voice can speak in over 90 languages while retaining a recognisably consistent tone. Your brand sounds familiar in every market, without having to cast a new voice-over artist for each language. I recommend having a native speaker check every language, especially brand names, numbers and idioms.
When a human voice-over artist is a better choice
Honestly, AI is not always the best choice. For highly emotional brand films, well-known brand voices, or when a broadcaster or client requires it, a human voice-over artist is the better solution. A combination is also possible: a human voice-over for the master, and AI for versions and additional languages. This is only possible with the voice-over artist’s explicit consent.
Legal considerations for AI voices
The voices of real people are replicated only with their written consent. AI voices are labelled under the EU AI Act where required.

Which projects are suitable for AI voice-overs?
AI voice-overs are especially suitable for commercials with many variations, campaigns in multiple languages, short social media videos and projects where the script may still change shortly before release. They are also a good choice for explainers and product videos because revisions can be made quickly.
AI voice-over production: more than text-to-speech
An AI voice can read text aloud. In a commercial, it also needs to convey an attitude, pronounce the product name correctly and land on the edit. When commissioning AI voice-over production, the script is only one part of the brief. Footage, audience and intended channel matter too. We cast the voice against the film: a quiet brand story needs a different delivery from a short product advert, even if the scripts are similar in length.
Professional AI voice-over services combine casting, multiple takes, pronunciation checks and mixing. International AI video productions need language-specific script and timing checks rather than an automatic word-for-word transfer. Replicating a real person’s voice requires their written consent. Useful materials include the script, a brand pronunciation list, the intended mood and a reference edit. How it works
- Write for the ear: The text is written and checked to make sure it is easy to speak.
- Cast the voice against the picture: Several voices are placed directly under the edit.
- Takes: Each sentence is generated several times, with deliberate direction for emotion and pace.
- Selection and editing: The best takes are selected and matched to the edit.
- Mix for the channel: Room sound, EQ, compression and loudness are matched to TV, cinema or social media.
- Delivery: All versions and languages, with labelling where required.
What does it cost?
The scope of work depends on these factors:
- Text length and number of versions
- Number of languages and native-speaker review
- Casting and takes required
- Mixing for one or more channels
- Combination with a human voice-over artist
- Scope and duration of usage

FAQ
Do AI voice-overs really sound real?
Yes, when they are produced with direction: text written for the ear, multiple takes, breaths, room sound and timing that matches the image. Without this work, the AI is usually immediately noticeable.
Which AI voice is the best?
The one that suits your image. That is why I audition several voices directly under the edit instead of listening to them separately.
Can a specific voice be cloned?
Technically, yes. But I replicate the voices of real people only with their written consent.
Which languages are available for AI voice-overs?
The same voice can speak in over 90 languages. I recommend a native-speaker review for every language that is published.
Can AI voice-overs be used in TV commercials?
Yes. The voice is mixed to EBU R128 and delivered according to the broadcaster’s specifications. Some broadcasters or clients require a human voice-over artist; I clarify this in advance.
Do I have to label an AI voice?
Where the EU AI Act requires it, yes. I will discuss with you whether and how labelling should be implemented for the relevant channel.
What does an AI voice-over cost?
It depends on text length, languages, versions, mixing and usage. After a brief conversation, you will receive a fixed-price proposal.
When is a human voice-over artist the better choice?
For highly emotional brand films, well-known brand voices, or when a broadcaster or client requires it. A combination of a human voice-over artist and AI is also possible.
